Distinguished and Famous people from Wyalong
📚 Dymphna Cusack
Dymphna Cusack was born at Wyalong in 1902 and became a novelist, playwright and social campaigner. Teaching preceded a writing career concerned with work, women and inequality. Collaboration was an important part of that career, including Come in Spinner, written with Florence James and published in 1951. Her professional life took her far beyond the district, but the town retains a precise birthplace connection. The range of her work extended from stage to fiction and public argument, giving Wyalong a genuine association with Australian literary life.
🎖️ Reginald Rattey VC
Reginald Rattey was born at nearby Barmedman in 1917 and earned the Victoria Cross for actions on Bougainville during the Second World War. After service he established a sheep, cattle and wheat property on a lease fronting Lake Cowal, near West Wyalong. The farming years made the broader Wyalong district a substantial part of his postwar life, with a local street later carrying his name. Ill health eventually brought a move into town. His connection is district upbringing and farming, distinct from a claim that he was born in Wyalong itself.
